Song of the Week–This Land is Your Land

Monday, January 19th, 2009

This seems an appropriate song this week. It’s funny because I just now sat down to make this post and hadn’t a clue what song to do (too many choices!) and for some reason it just came to me just this second that this would be a good song.

I really want my children to grow up hearing and singing American folk songs, and also patriotic songs…and an American patriotic folk song like this is perfect, I think!

Not only is it perfect because of our new president being inaugurated tomorrow (a history-making president which has caused such a surge of patriotism and hope in our country!) …but also today is Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday…when we remember another great man in our history that helped our country become a better place…something I know much of our country is hoping that President Obama will do as well.

Sooo…”This Land is Your Land” just seems all around perfect!!

Now, there are quite a few verses to this song, so I’m only going to teach my children the main part and the first verse, maybe the second. I don’t believe I knew more than that myself as a child.

So, here are the lyrics (choose as many or as few of the verses as you would like to use):

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music by Woody Guthrie

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

Chorus (2x)

And here we have Woody himself singing his wonderful song:
(not a great video, but you get to hear the original song.)

Song of the Week: On a Cold and Frosty Morning (Three Craw)

Monday, January 12th, 2009

So sorry about last week! I had a song all figured out (Waddly-acha) and started teaching to my kids and was trying to get them to help me demo the song in a video because I couldn’t find the song recorded anywhere on the net…but they wouldn’t go for it. And then they decided they didn’t like the song after all. Bleh. Maybe another week. By then the week was half over and I just didn’t bother doing one, figured I’d just do one this week.

I’m getting really bad at posting these on Sundays, so I guess I’ll just plan on doing it sometime on Mondays from now on. And obviously I’m not so reliable for that either…but hey, the day’s not over yet!

Anyway Maeven thought it would be a good idea to do some winter songs since, well, it’s winter! and I immediately knew what album to check for ideas…I have had Rachel Buchman’s “Sing a Song of Seasons” for some time and REALLY love it! Funny because when I bought it I thought it was a different cd by the same title but frankly I like Rachel’s better! (I found the right one later, and Rachel’s is a lot more fun.) On this cd Rachel sings groups of songs for each season…found 2 that I really thought would be good, but since I like the second better for its cultural aspect (and it didn’t seem quite so preschooler-ish, since Maeven’s kinda old for the little kid songs)…here ya go!

“On a Cold & Frosty Morning (Three Craw)”
is a Scottish song…here’s Rachel’s version. (scroll down to song #8 and you can hear the whole thing for free! The whole cd is awesome, incidentally! I had no idea you could listen to the whole cd for free!)

Judging by the google search I just conducted to find the lyrics, there’s a lot of variation for this song. So if you’re bothered by the third craw eating the other twa (3rd crow ate the other two), you can find all sorts of variations of the lyrics and change it as you like. :)

And here’s another version of the song I really like, by Sharon, Lois & Bram (scroll down to song #20, “Three Craw”.)

That version still has “craw” getting “et”, LOL…but its cute too. I think you should just pick which version (Rachel’s or Sharon, Lois & Bram’s) that you like better.

I haven’t included the lyrics today because I’m not sure which version to do…and I didn’t find the right version of the lyrics on the web to copy/paste, but both recordings are very easy to understand.

Incidentally, I’ll be checking Rhapsody out for more songs…because I had NO idea that they had so many cds you could listen to for free! And if you really like them, you can download them for just 99cents a song! :)   Pretty cool, because itunes often is lacking on the kid music I’m looking for.

Song of the Week: Auld Lang Syne

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Woops! I neglected to post a song of the week yet!! Sorry about that!

Could there be any other song for this week?

Here’s a good video for learning this song, including the lyrics:

You could also use their website, which plays a line and has you repeat for the whole song! Pretty cool! Not the best singers but that part doesn’t really matter.

Then head over to YouTube and search the name of this song and you’ll find a ton of great versions that are very artistically done. But I like to teach my kids the simple, basic version before I go and show them the fancy versions…that way they already have it firmly in their mind and the other versions don’t confuse them.

Song of the Week–Deck the Halls

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Sorry this didn’t go up yesterday…I was going to do it after my son went to sleep last night, but then he just WOULDN’T go to sleep! Then I ended up crashing out with him. Oh well.

Maeven helped me choose this week’s song…I asked her if we should do a Christmas song, and she liked that idea and suggested “Deck the Halls” because she didn’t know it all yet. I’m glad she picked this one because its one of my favorites!

A little history on this song:
The music to Deck the Halls is believed to Welsh in origin and was reputed to have come from a tune called “Nos Galan” dating back to the sixteenth century. In the eighteenth century Mozart used the tune to Deck the Halls for a violin and piano duet J.P. McCaskey is sometimes credited with the lyrics of Deck the Halls but he only edited the Franklin Square Song Collection in which the lyrics were first published. The first publication date of Deck the Halls is 1881. The author is unknown but the words are said to originate in America.

Here’s the music.

And here’s the lyrics:

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
‘Tis the season to be jolly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel
Fa-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la.
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.

See the blazing Yule before us.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Follow me in merry measure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
While I tell of Yule-tide treasure.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Fast away the old year passes.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Hail the new year, lads and lasses
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Sing we joyous, all together.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Heedless of the wind and weather.
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

We’re going to work on just the first verse with Tyren…if he gets the other verses, that’s great but I think that might be a bit much for a 3yr old. Maeven and I will see how far we get with the other verses during the week. I’m going to print up the lyrics (you can find them all over the net, but i got mine here …just click the little tiny print button to the right of the title)  to help us learn. :)

This is a good song to talk about what the words mean too…there’s a lot of old English in there, so we are going to talk about what it means to “don we now our gay apparel” and such.  :)

HAPPY SINGING!

FIRST EVER Song-of-the-Week: A Ram Sam Sam

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

OK, so we’ve already started the week…but I was just reading another blog that I subscribe to, and that got me to thinking about my idea about posting a song a week that I will then teach my children (or in Maeven’s case, often it will be to remind her of the song she already learned years ago) a song and encourage them to sing it all week.

I was thinking that if I am able to do this for myself here…that others might find it and also be able to teach the song to their children that week as well. Its the one thing so far I’ve not yet seen represented on other people’s homeschooling blogs that I know I can do. I have seen ideas for weekly science and problem solving and art and such, but nothing so far that is about SINGING songs. I think I saw something for weekly music, but it was classical, I believe…anyway I have only about a ZILLION singable songs in my stinkin head! So this should be easy for me!!

Why do I have so many songs in my head, you ask? I’m glad you asked!

First off, I grew up in a family that was very often singing. My dad has a fantastic voice, and often led us in singing. He’s a preacher so we got LOTS of singing in church, and then he continued the singing at home. And this was before we had a good car stereo so our road trips (which we had many when we were growing up) almost never included recorded music, but instead car singing. In rounds even!

Oh and did I mention that my parents met while both of them were counseling at a church summer camp? Yeah, BOTH my parents used to be camp counselors, so not only were church songs abundant in my house growing up, but many many folk songs and campfire songs  (comet song, anyone? LOL! let me know if you get that one, ROFL!) and you name it…They also were huge musical fans…so soundtracks were regularly played at home as well…and re-sung later in the car and such. (“I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair!”)

Add to that that I have always worked with children. My resume is FULL of jobs working with kids…and music always comes into play with kids, doesn’t it? At least quality work does. If you leave music out of a child’s education you’re seriously missing a hugely important part of childhood. At least, that’s my feelings on it.

And of course…the cobbler is the one with kids that have no shoes, right? So with all these ZILLIONS of songs that I know and have taught hundreds of children over the years, and all my singing background (I was even in performance choirs for 3 years, and the school musical my senior year of high school…but don’t let that fool you…I do NOT have a great singing voice.)…do MY kids know all these songs? Noooooooo, of course not! Hence, my need for a “song of the week”. This should give me a kick in the butt to drag out all those songs I know and actually TEACH THEM TO MY KIDS! sheesh! LOL!

So where to start? This one was easy. Immediately the first song that popped into my head was “A Ram Sam Sam.” This is a song that I remember from growing up…and it was a song I relearned as a preschool teacher and have taught MANY children. Maeven already knows it from when I ran a “Mommy & Me” program in our home, but will, I think, enjoy teaching her brother. Tyren will absolutely love it, I just know it! He’s such a musical little fella. Makes up his own songs all the time. Time to expand his repertoire now. :)

Funny thing, I googled this song and actually found the lyrics and even a good recording of this song!  Click the “Play” link or download it to your computer. And I should note that this site has a really great songlist of lyrics/music for a lot of great songs, check it out!

I should note that I pronounce the words differently. But you can pronounce it however you like. I always sang it “uh ram sam sam” (where ram and sam rhyme with ma’am), just like the recording, but my “guli guli guli guli guli” sounds like “goo-lee goo-lee goo-lee goo-lee goo-lee” (not guh-lee, like how they pronounce it in the recording), and i’ve also heard some preK teachers sing it “golly”…and the “a rafi” part i have always pronounced “uh raw fee”. (they pronounce it “uh rah vey”) but pick whatever you like, its all good. :)

now, actions…these are important and easy!

each part of the song has its own action.

“A ram sam sam”:
–make fists…on “A”(“uh”), you hold your right fist up at about the level of your head and your left fist low, closer to your lap…
–on “ram” “sam” and “sam” you knock your right fist on top of your left fist for each syllable.
–Then for the next “A ram sam sam,” you switch to your left fist knocking on top of your right fist 3 times (ram/sam/sam).

“Guli guli guli guli guli”:
–make your hands roll in a circle in front of you just like the wheels on the bus motion

Then same “ram sam sam” actions again for the next “a ram sam sam”

“A rafi, a rafi”:
–make your right hand wave (side to side wave, not the open/close wave) for the first “a rafi”
–make your left hand wave for the second “a rafi”

Then the same “guli” actions for the next “guli guli guli guli guli”

And the same “ram sam sam” actions again for the last “a ram sam sam”

THAT’S IT!! Easy, huh? Then you do it over and over again, getting faster each time until you are going so fast that your hands are just a messy blur cuz you can’t possibly get all the actions right at that speed. LOL! It’s great fun!

Then there’s the modified version of this song, which kids always love, where you substitue “A Pizza Hut” for “a ram sam sam” (and make a pointy roof over your head), “Kentucky Fried Chicken” for the “guli guli…” part (hands in armpits, flap like a chicken), and “McDonald’s” for the “a rafi” part (make an M with your arms similar to making a big circle over your head, but you make your fingers meet on top of your head to form the M).

I will try to get my kids to do a video of this this week so I can show you all this in action. If I can’t, I’ll brave the embarassment myself, LOL!

outdoor hour challenge & music ideas

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

well i’m still stumbling along…but haven’t found time to blog…sorry…i’ll get back to it, i really want to be better at keeping track of things here.

but right now i wanted to post about this thing i discovered on another blog, the “outdoor hour challenge.” i am going to be starting this with my kids…since i’ve not found time to organize anything science related. i’ve not found time for a lot of things. but maeven continues to learn…and read read read…she’s whizzing through chapter books now! so time is not wasted. and life is a learning experience…and she finds her own projects to do all the time. i’m very proud of her!

anyway, i really like the idea of this outdoor hour challenge…and on another site there is a “sketch tuesday” that i’m going to start with maeve as well. here’s the latest sketch tuesday challenge. maeven will really get into this sort of thing, i think. and more art for her! (which is totally her thing)…and i am finding all sorts of ideas like this on other people’s blogs…i just have to get organized and plan them for maeve.

this got me to thinking that i would like to do something here on this blog. there’s one thing i’ve yet to find anywhere (didn’t really look though, but don’t need to)…something to help us learn new songs regularly. i know a TON of songs…with my background in preschool, my head is crammed full of them! and i continue to collect kids’ music cds, and review them on my website. i’m way behind, though…there’s a ton that i need to add.

anyway, i’m thinking of starting a song-of-the-week. for my own kids to learn, and i’ll post here so others can benefit as well. i think learning one singable song a week is a good way to start adding a bunch of music to our day. i will start compiling a list of what i want to teach them…i have so many to choose from! and i want them to be songs that can be sung without the cd. “singable songs” (will draw some from raffi, hehe)…but right now i need to go shower and get some stuff done around here. and i have a thing to writeup to take to my first discovery center board meeting tonite. (they asked me to join! i’m so excited!) i’m proposing a children’s concert to benefit TDC. got a lot of info about it already and i’ll just have to organize all that. goodness but i have so many things i’m working on!!
